A Taste of Greece in Aberdeen.
Those of us with a love of all things Greek are particularly fortunate in having our very own “little corner of Greece” in Aberdeen – in John Street to be precise, where Christos and Fiona Karageorgiades have been serving exquisite Greek dishes for the past 14 years; everything from kalamari to kleftiko, from mezedes to mousaka. The food served is always tasty, completely authentic, and cooked to perfection. Any complaints are likely to be along the lines of “…..but I’ll never manage to finish all this!”. Yet it is all so nice that one invariably does!
But Christos’ taverna is about much more than food. Anyone who has ever descended the stairs into the vine decked taverna with its pretty frescoed walls, is immediately enveloped by an atmosphere of warmth and welcome, generated by Christos himself and his staff of Greek waiters and waitresses. With Greek music playing in the background, a glass of Greek wine in your hand and a plate of mezedakia on the table you feel truly transported to Greece; a mini holiday from Aberdeen’s often dreich weather.
Since coming to Aberdeen from his native Athens and setting up the taverna, Christos, along with his wife Fiona, has been a staunch supporter of the Aberdeen Scottish Hellenic Society, regularly donating dinners in the taverna as raffle prizes, or as a “reward” for finding the lucky coin in the Vasilopitta. They particularly welcome members of the Society offering a generous 15% discount on all food and drink Monday to Thursday.
Christos is a fine ambassador for his native country, with his boundless enthusiasm, sense of fun and friendliness. No matter how busy he always finds time to chat and joke with customers, to explain a dish, or to dance a few steps as το κέφι
takes him. It is easy to see why their two boys, Alexandros and Pavlos, are keen, when they are a little older, to join their parents in the taverna.
Together, Christos and Fiona have created a wonderful haven in the centre of town for Greekophiles, and we must all be thankful that Fiona (an Aberdeen quine) went off on holiday to Athens all those years ago and brought back her very own Greek “loon”!
We would recommend Christos Greek Taverna to all our members and assure them of a memorable evening, wining, dining, and simply soaking in the atmosphere ….. bon appetit, or as they say in Greece, “Καλή Όρεξη"!
