MODERN GREEK 1a (BEGINNERS) Mondays, weekly, from 7 – 9 pm The Beginners' Class introduces all four elements of the language, namely listening, speaking, reading and writing, to provide a foundation for communicating effectively in Greek. The teaching will be supported by a variety of classroom activities designed to assist learning and introduce an element of fun. Within the context of learning the language, students will gain insights into many aspects of Greek life and culture. The course uses a textbook which is approved and recommended by the Greek Language Centre of the Greek Ministry of Education. A special version of this material for beginners who have English as their native language is available. This Communicate in Greek set of materials consists of a Textbook, two Workbooks, and a CD. This can be ordered and purchased on-line at www.bibliagora.co.uk. However, it will be perfectly adequate if you obtain only the textbook. The material is quite expensive but you will get plenty use out of it if you decide to go on to Greek 2 or Greek 3 where you will cover the remainder of the book. There are no examinations and there will be no formal testing. The course is designed to provide a completely friendly and supportive environment for adult learners. The class is offered at a fee of £65 for the ten weeks of classes or on a pay-as-you-go basis where the charge is £8 at each class you attend. Full-time students at school, college or university pay £4. The tutor, Kostas Papadopoulos, is native Greek speaker and a very experienced teacher of Modern Greek. He will ensure you have benefit of authentic pronunciation and communication in Greek. It is planned to hold a continuation class MODERN GREEK 1b for a further 10 weeks in the second term when the dates will be 23 January to 26 March, 2012. The same book will be used. There has been such a class for several years now, but the Scottish Hellenic Society reserves the right to cancel this and any class if numbers fall below a viable minimum.
MODERN GREEK 2a Mondays, weekly, from 7 – 9 pm Who is a Post-Beginner? For the purposes of this class it is anyone who knows the Greek alphabet and has made some progress in reading and pronouncing simple Greek. This means that the class is designed to accommodate those who are self-taught, those who have attended a short course in Holiday Greek which taught the alphabet, or those who may have forgotten most of the Greek grammar they once knew. The class will start with revision sessions to ensure that nobody is disadvantaged when we start off at Lesson 7 in the book. This will allow everyone taking the class to build on a firm foundation of common knowledge. Emphasis in the classes will be placed on speaking Greek. The aim is to encourage successful communication with plenty of enjoyable speaking and listening activities. The teaching and learning will be enhanced by the use of audio and other multimedia resources. There are no examinations and there will be no formal testing.
